Guide
Junsei no Sato is a beautiful 'Satoyama' (traditional rural landscape) located in the Oishi Ryumon hills of Otsu, Shiga Prefecture, where nature and human culture coexist in perfect harmony. This area is famously managed by the renowned Japanese confectionery brand 'Kano Takumi An.' The vast grounds are home to a diverse array of flora, including cherry blossoms, plum blossoms, camellias, hydrangeas, and native chestnut and red pine trees, allowing visitors to feel the subtle transitions of the Japanese seasons up close. As you pass through the traditional 'Nagamayamon' gate at the entrance, you will find a Sukiya-style main building, a wagashi (Japanese sweets) workshop, and charming dining areas and tea rooms, offering a peaceful escape from the hustle and bustle of daily life.
This land has long been a place where the culture of Japanese confectionery has been nurtured alongside a deep respect for the natural landscape. Since wagashi is an art form that expresses the essence of the seasons, Junsei no Sato serves as a vital hub for preserving and transmitting this spirit to the modern era. The architecture and facilities throughout the grounds utilize traditional Sukiya-style designs and renovated folk houses, reflecting a profound Japanese aesthetic. This design philosophy, which integrates buildings seamlessly into the landscape, honors the 'Satoyama' culture of respecting and cherking the blessings of the land.
The park offers diverse experiences that change beautifully depending on when you visit. The walking paths are a major highlight, featuring hundreds of thousands of seasonal wildflowers that create a vibrant natural route. At the tea room 'Seikan-kyo,' you can experience the refined culture of tea and traditional sweets. For a more substantial meal, the 'Sanju-tei' restaurant offers 'Junsei Kaiseki'—a seasonal multi-course meal enjoyed amidst the gentle sunlight filtering through the trees. Additionally, the site features a variety of cultural facilities, such as 'Bakery & Café Noza' for bread and coffee, and 'Toubou Ju-maru' where pottery making takes place.
Because the charm of the village changes with the seasons, your experience will vary based on your visit. In spring, enjoy cherry and plum blossoms; in early summer, the hydrangeas bloom; and in autumn, the landscape is colored by chestnuts and autumn foliage. The seasonal kaiseki meals and limited-edition wagashi are special delicacies that can only be enjoyed during their specific seasons. While most people enjoy walking during the daylight hours, please check the specific operating hours for each facility in advance.
Beyond simple sightseeing, Junsei no Sato offers various ways to touch Japanese culture. You can participate in a formal tea ceremony at the tea room to enjoy authentic matcha and sweets. At the pottery facility 'Toubou Ju-maru,' you can experience traditional craftsmanship by working with clay. Furthermore, the variety of food offerings—from seasonal-themed meals to local breads and sweets—allows you to engage your senses and deepen your understanding of Japanese culinary culture.
