Juniko is a collective name for a group of 33 lakes and ponds located in Fukaura Town, Aomori Prefecture. Situated on the western side of the Shirakami-Sanchi World Heritage site, the area features natural lakes nestled within a dense, ancient beech forest. The most famous site is "Aoike" (Blue Pond), renowned for its breathtaking, deep cobalt blue color. This region is also officially recognized as a Forest Therapy Base—the first of its kind in Aomori Prefecture—providing an ideal environment for relaxation and mental well-being through nature.
As part of the Shirakami-Sanchi area, this region boasts a diverse ecosystem that has been shaped over more than 8,000 years. The sprawling natural beech forests are a vital part of the local ecosystem and are highly significant from a nature conservation perspective. The area is designated as part of the Tsugaru Quasi-National Park and a Natural Recreation Forest, ensuring the preservation of its pristine landscape. The continuous natural cycles of this ancient forest continue to shape its rich biodiversity today.
The Juniko area contains several lakes, each offering a unique visual experience. The most iconic is "Aoike," famous for its vivid blue hue. Other notable spots include Wakitsubo Pond and Kanayama Pond, which display different expressions depending on the topography and surrounding vegetation. The striking contrast between the colorful waters and the surrounding green beech forests makes every view a masterpiece of natural color.
While Juniko offers beautiful scenery year-round, the landscape changes dramatically with the seasons. Visitors can enjoy the vibrant fresh greenery of the young beech leaves in spring and the brilliant autumn colors in the fall. Please note that during the winter season, there may be restrictions on certain roads (such as the Juniko Park Town Road and Prefectural Road) and walking trails. It is highly recommended to check local conditions before visiting during winter months.
Visitors can enjoy walking along well-maintained paths known as "Therapy Roads." These routes are designed to accommodate different fitness levels and time availability. For example, you can choose a shorter route from Aoike to Wakitsubo Pond (approx. 2.5 hours), or a more extensive trek including Kanayama Pond and Itahata Pond (approx. 5 hours). Guided tours are also available for those who wish to explore the area while learning about the local ecosystem from an expert.
