Jozankei Onsen is a renowned hot spring destination located in Minami-ku, Sapporo, Hokkaido. Nestled within the scenic Shikotsu-toya National Park, the hot spring town unfolds along the beautiful valleys formed by the Toyohira and Shirai Rivers. The waters are a sodium-chloride type, featuring a high discharge rate of 8,600 liters per minute and temperatures ranging from 60°C to 80°C. With a history spanning over 160 years, this area is conveniently located only about an hour's drive from the center of Sapporo.
The history of this hot spring area dates back to its discovery in 1866 (the 2nd year of the Keio era). It is said that the name originates from the monk Bisen Teizan, who discovered the hot springs. The local culture is deeply preserved through various historical-sites, such as the Jozankei Kyodo Museum, which showcases tools and artifacts used by former residents. Additionally, the Iwato Kannon-do temple was established to honor those who lost their lives during the construction of the road connecting Otaru and Jozankei in 1936; it houses 33 statues of Kannon within a 120-meter long cave.
The hot spring town offers a unique blend of natural beauty and cultural elements. Near Tsukimi Bridge, you will find Jozan Gensen Park, a site commemorating the discovery of the springs, which features foot baths (ashiyu), hand baths, and the "Ontama-no-yu" area where you can even cook your own hot spring eggs.
