Jomyoji is a temple of the Kencho-ji school of the Rinzai sect, located in Kamakura, Kanagawa Prefecture. It holds the prestigious rank of fifth among the Kamakura Gozan (Five Great Zen Temples) and possesses a rich historical connection to the Ashikaga clan. The temple grounds are home to precious structures and gardens designated as National Historic Sites and Special Preservation Districts of Kanagawa Prefecture. The scenery changes beautifully with the seasons, featuring blooming peonies in spring, vibrant autumn leaves, and plum blossoms in winter, all surrounding the tranquil Kisen-an tea house and its Zen-style dry landscape gardens.
The temple's origins date back to 1184, founded by Yoshikane Ashikaga, a high-ranking official under Minamoto no Yoritomo. The site is deeply intertwined with the history of the Ashikaga clan and figures such as Hojo Masako and Minamoto no Sanetomo. Within the grounds, you can find the Hogyo-in stupa, believed to be the tomb of Sadaiji Ashikaga, which serves as a testament to the warrior culture of the Kamakura period. The area is also steeped in local lore, including the legends surrounding the name 'Inagiri' and its connection to the surrounding landscape.
Key highlights include the Main Hall (Hondo), characterized by its heavy, dignified roof structure. The architecture around the hall utilizes materials from the Muromachi period, allowing visitors to observe authentic historical building styles. Behind the main hall lies the Hogyo-in stupa, adding a sense of profound history to the site. Additionally, the grounds feature various historical spots, including Inari-yama with its legends related to Fujiwara no Kamatari, and the remains of a Western-style building. The seasonal shifts in plant life, from flowers to autumn colors, provide a constantly changing backdrop for exploration.
The temple's beauty is highlighted by its seasonal flora. Spring is perfect for viewing peonies, winter for plum blossoms, and autumn for the stunning way the foliage colors the landscape. For a relaxing experience, visit during the day to enjoy the tea house or wander through the gardens. There is also a restaurant located near the edge of the grounds, built on the site of a former Western-style building, where you can enjoy a meal surrounded by nature.
At the Kisen-an tea house, you can enjoy a traditional matcha tea experience. This offers a wonderful opportunity to experience the Japanese Way of Tea while gazing at the garden. The menu includes Matcha with dry sweets (660 JPY) and Matcha with fresh seasonal sweets (1,100 JPY) (prices exclude tax). While individuals and small groups can walk in without a reservation, please note that groups of 10 or more must book in advance. It is a perfect way to spend a quiet, meditative moment.
The area surrounding Jomyoji is known as the Nikaido/Jomyoji district, a neighborhood that preserves the historic atmosphere of Kamakura. Nearby, you will find various historical temples and scenic walking paths. You can also visit the adjacent 'Isigama Garden Terrace' to enjoy dining in a beautiful English garden setting. The temple is easily accessible via bus from Kamakura Station, making it easy to combine with other local sightseeing-spots.
Please respect the temple rules during your visit. Cash is generally required for admission fees and tea house experiences. We recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes as you will be traversing the temple grounds. While photography is generally permitted, please be mindful of signs regarding restrictions on photographing Buddhist statues or specific sacred areas. Public restrooms are available on the premises.
