Joedu City Aquarium Umigatari is a municipal aquarium located in Gochi, Joetsu City, Niigata Prefecture. Following a major renewal in June 2018, it was reborn under its current name. Situated right along the coast of the Sea of Japan, the facility houses approximately 300 species and 45,000 individual marine organisms. A standout feature is the Magellanic penguin exhibit, which boasts one of the largest populations in the world, alongside spectacular performances by bottlenose dolphins that captivate visitors of all ages.
The origins of this institution date back to 1934, reflecting a long history of marine research and public engagement in the region. Through its 2018 revitalization, the aquarium was transformed into the modern 'Umigatari' experience. The facility is a three-story structure that serves both as a public attraction and a center for the display and study of marine life, deeply rooted in the local coastal culture.
Inside the aquarium, you will find the 'Magellanic Penguin Museum,' a dedicated space where you can observe these charming birds up close. The museum hosts a significant number of individuals, allowing for a deep look into their natural behaviors.
