The JMSDF Kure Museum, affectionately known as 'Tetsunokujira-kan' (Iron Whale Museum), is a facility dedicated to public relations for the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF). Situated in Kure, Hiroshima Prefecture, it showcases the history and equipment of the JMSDF. The most striking feature is the outdoor display of a real submarine. The featured vessel is the 'Akishio' (SS-579), a Yuしお-class submarine that once served in the JMSDF. This museum serves as a visual gateway to understanding the activities, technological advancements, and history of the maritime forces.
The facility was established to preserve and communicate the history of the JMSDF, specifically regarding mine sweeping and submarine technology. After being decommissioned in March 2004, the 'Akishio' underwent internal equipment replacement and cleaning for its new role as a museum piece. In September 2006, the vessel was moved to the main building site, and it now stands as a monumental symbol of Kure's maritime heritage. The exhibits cover the evolution of the JMSDF, the critical role of mine sweepers, and the operational complexities of submarine warfare.
The museum is organized by floor, with each level focusing on a distinct theme. The 1st floor explores the general history of the JMSDF, while the 2nd floor focuses on the threats posed by naval mines and the vital role of minesweepers in neutralizing them. The 3rd floor is dedicated to the history and operations of submarines. These exhibits utilize a rich variety of materials, including authentic models, historical diagrams, and educational videos.
The centerpiece of the museum is the 'Akishio' submarine located outdoors. Visitors can actually step onto the deck near the command station. Please note that for security and intelligence reasons, certain parts of the hull, external fittings, the anchor, and the propulsion system (screw propeller) have been replaced with dummy parts or are restricted areas. Staff members are stationed throughout the facility to assist visitors.
The museum is open year-round with no specific seasonal restrictions. Visiting during daylight hours is highly recommended, as it allows you to observe the intricate details of the 'Akishio' submarine under natural light. Since the indoor exhibits rely heavily on video presentations and models, the experience is enjoyable regardless of the weather.
The primary highlight is the opportunity to experience the internal structure of a real submarine and stand on its deck. Through the use of models, videos, and historical illustrations, visitors gain a profound visual and technical understanding of JMSDF equipment, mine sweeping operations, and submarine maneuvers.
The museum is located in an area of Kure heavily associated with maritime history. Directly across the street, you will find the Yamato Museum (Kure City Maritime History and Science Museum), and to the north is the 'Youme Town Kure' shopping complex. The area around Kure Port is dotted with various historical maritime-related sites and landmarks.
Comfortable clothing is recommended for your visit. As you will likely be exploring the outdoor submarine display, please dress appropriately for the weather.
