Jiyu Gakuenin Asunokan, located in Toshima City, Tokyo, is a National Important Cultural Property. Originally established in 1921 as part of Jiyu Gakuen, the complex features buildings designed by the legendary Frank Lloyd Wright and his disciple Arata Endo. This site serves as a premier example of "dynamic preservation," where historic modern architecture is not just preserved as a relic, but actively used for weddings, concerts, and various cultural events, playing a vital role in the history of modern architecture.
The facility began as the grounds for Jiyu Gakuen, founded in 1921 by Kiichi and Motoko Hani. While it originally functioned as a place for women's education, the name "Asunokan" has been carried forward even after the school relocated in 1934. In 1997, it was designated as a National Important Cultural Property, and in 2003, it was selected by DOCOMOMO JAPAN as a significant site representing the Modern Movement in Japan. It is far more than just an old building; it is a facility of immense historical value that showcases the evolution of modern architecture.
The most striking feature is the unique architectural style influenced by Frank Lloyd Wright. Visitors can directly observe the design philosophy of the Modern Movement through the interplay of straight lines and curves, the clever use of natural light, and the sophisticated spatial composition. The complex includes various facilities such as an auditorium and classrooms, each specifically designed for its intended purpose. Standard tours and visits are available from 10:00 to 16:00. On certain holidays, guided explanations may be provided at 11:00 and 14:00. Because the way light enters the building and the views from the windows change with the seasons, you can experience a different atmosphere depending on the time of day. Please note that if a private event or a rental is taking place, certain areas of the facility may be closed to the public.
