Jigokunuma is a pond located at the foot of Mt. Hakkoda in Aomori Prefecture, formed near the site of an ancient explosive crater. The area is a living testament to volcanic activity, with hot springs bubbling up from the ground and sulfurous gases constantly escaping from various vents. The pond itself is highly acidic and contains boiling water reaching temperatures of 90°C, making it an environment where most life cannot survive. The sight of thick steam rising against the desolate, rocky landscape truly lives up to its name, which translates to 'Hell Pond.'
This site preserves the intense history of volcanic activity. The terrain retains the characteristics of an explosive crater, allowing visitors to feel the direct energy of the Earth through the constant emission of gas and steam. The area is also deeply connected to the local hot spring culture, being situated right next to the historic Sukayu Onsen, one of Japan's most famous hot spring destinations.

The greatest draw of Jigokunuma is its raw, desolate beauty. The area surrounding the pond is dotted with volcanic vents where steam rises from the ground, creating a landscape where little vegetation can grow. The contrast between this harsh environment and the seasonal beauty of Mt. Hakkoda is spectacular. In autumn, the surrounding forest turns into a vibrant tapestry of red and gold, creating a dramatic color palette against the greenish hues of the pond.
Jigokunuma reveals a different face in every season. In spring and summer, the desolate pond stands out sharply against the lush greenery of Mt. Hakkoda. In autumn, the landscape becomes even more dramatic as the surrounding trees change color. The visual impact also shifts depending on the time of day, as the density of the rising steam and the angle of the sunlight constantly change the atmosphere of the site.

Directly across from the pond, there is a traditional rest area known as 'Manju-fukashi.' Here, visitors can experience a unique local tradition where you sit on a bench through which 95°C hot water flows. By sitting down (with clothes on), the rising steam warms your lower body. This practice is a traditional way to experience the natural heat of the area and is locally known as a way to promote fertility and rejuvenation.
Jigokunuma is just a 5-minute walk from the famous Sukayu Onsen. The Sukayu Onsen area serves as an excellent base for nature walks and hiking, offering plenty of opportunities for seasonal nature observation. The surrounding region is part of the rich natural environment of the Tsugaru National Park.

Because of the volcanic gases and heat, please wear comfortable, practical clothing suitable for walking in a natural environment. When using local facilities like the 'Manju-fukashi' area, please follow local customs. For transportation, it is highly recommended to carry cash, a transit IC card, or a credit card for nearby facilities and buses. Please exercise caution when taking photos to ensure your safety near the hot vents. Note that the terrain is natural and may have uneven surfaces or steps.
