The Kawana Stained Glass Museum is located in the scenic Izu Kogen area of Ito City, Shizuoka Prefecture. It is a sanctuary where visitors can fully immerse themselves in the beauty of stained glass. The museum houses authentic antique stained glass from the 1800s, brought from the United Kingdom, which once decorated British churches, cathedrals, and the private rooms of noble estates. The experience is multi-sensory: the soft light filtering through the glass and lamps, the nostalgic melodies of antique music boxes and pipe organs, and the calming scent of aromatherapy create a truly tranquil atmosphere. Guests are encouraged to relax on the comfortable sofas and enjoy a slow, luxurious passage of time.
The collection features traditional British art pieces. This includes works by renowned figures such as Charles Kemp, who was prolific in designing British church glass, and works from the era of Harry Clark, famous for his intricate illustrations. These are not merely decorative items but precious antiques with deep historical significance, preserved and displayed here in the heart of I never-ending nature in Izu.
The museum features distinct spaces like the St. Michael and St. Mary chapels, each offering a unique atmosphere through different glass designs. The experience goes beyond sight; the auditory charm of antique music boxes and pipe organs, combined with aromatherapy, engages your senses of hearing and smell. The intricate designs of the glass reflect the spirit of medieval religious art and the Arts and Crafts movement.
The museum is open from 10:00 to 16:30. During the bright daylight hours, you can witness the stunning way light transmits through the colored glass. Toward the evening, the atmosphere shifts to a more subdued, cozy mood illuminated by the soft glow of antique lamps. The restaurant 'La Vita' offers dinner service (17:00–20:00) exclusively on Saturdays, Sundays, public holidays, and during peak seasons.
Beyond viewing the art, you can enjoy dining at the adjacent restaurant and cafe, 'La Vita,' which serves delicious pasta and sweets during lunch hours. Additionally, the museum shop offers a variety of unique items related to stained glass and the museum's aesthetic. You are also welcome to visit solely to enjoy the cafe and restaurant services.
Izu Kogen is home to many other attractions. The museum is situated within the Michelle Garden Court, a beautiful complex often used as a venue for weddings and professional wedding photography.

No prior reservation is required to enter the museum or the shop. However, for dinner service at the restaurant or for group visits, advanced confirmation is highly recommended.
Personal and non-commercial photography is permitted. However, photography and video recording are strictly prohibited during musical performances (approximately 15 minutes). Photography of merchandise for sale is also prohibited. Commercial photography involving models or professional photographers, as well as the use of DSLR cameras, tripods, or excessive portrait photography, may be restricted.
Small dogs (under 10kg) are permitted if they are kept in a carrier, cart, or sling bag. They cannot be carried in your arms, and guests must ensure pets do not sit on the furniture. Service animals (guide dogs, etc.) are always welcome.
