Located along the Iya Valley in Miyoshi City, Tokushima Prefecture, Iya Onsen is a secluded hot spring area nestled at the bottom of a deep gorge. A representative establishment, Hotel Iya Onsen, is a member of the Association for Preserving Secret Hot Springs of Japan. A standout feature is the unique access via a cable car that descends into the valley floor. From the open-air baths, which sit almost level with the treetops, guests can enjoy an overwhelming view of the rushing river and the surrounding mountains. The water is an alkaline simple sulfur spring, known for its soft, skin-friendly texture.
The region is steeped in the legend of the Heike clan, who are said to have fled to these mountains after their defeat in battle. Historically, it is said the Heike ancestors used these waters.
