Iwo World Kagoshima Aquarium is a premier municipal aquarium located in Honko Shinmachi, Kagoshima City. The name "Iwo" is a local Kagoshima dialect word for "fish." The facility focuses on the marine life of the Kagoshima coast and Kagoshima Bay, which are influenced by the Kuroshio Current. It is home to rare species such as Whale Sharks and the unique Satsuma ribbon worm. The building itself is an architectural landmark, designed with a striking silhouette inspired by a stingray.
Opened on May 30, 1997, the aquarium operates under the concept of "Kuroshio Roman Kaido" (The Romantic Path of the Kuroshio Current). It has achieved significant biological milestones, such as being the first in Japan to successfully implement feeding programs for the saltwater stingray and showcasing the rare Satsuma ribbon worm. The aquarium plays a vital role in biodiversity conservation and education. At the end of the exhibition path, there is a dedicated space designed by the first director to encourage visitors to reflect on the marine environment.
The aquarium features a multi-level layout from the 5th floor to the B2 level, designed for a seamless one-way viewing experience. The centerpiece is the massive "Kuroshio Grand Tank," containing 1,500 tons of water where visitors can marvel at Whale Sharks, Thresher Sharks, Bluefin Tuna, and Skipjack Tuna. Other highlights include an area replicating the seas of the Nansei Islands with coral reefs, sea cucumbers, and damselfish, as well as specialized tanks for mangroves, seals, electric eels, and pirarucu. From the observation hall, you can enjoy a stunning view of Sakurajima volcano across the water.
While open year-round, July and August are peak tourist months. During Golden Week and the summer holidays (including Obon), the aquarium often extends its hours until 21:00. A unique way to experience the marine life is by watching the free dolphin feeding sessions (approx. 10 mins) at the nearby canal. These occur at 10:30, 12:30, and 15:00 on weekdays, and at 11:30, 13:30, and 15:00 on Sundays, holidays, and during summer vacations.
Visitors can use the official "My Yuuyu" app to participate in a virtual experience of raising a digital Whale Shark. For a hands-on experience, the touch pool allows you to feel starfish and sea cucumbers. Additionally, you can collect a "Fish Stamp" (Uo-in)—a unique souvenir inspired by marine life like the Mola Mola (sunfish)—to commemorate your visit.
The aquarium is situated near the Kagoshima port area, offering beautiful waterfront views. The nearby canal area is a great spot to observe dolphin feeding activities for free.
Since the aquarium follows a specific viewing route through multiple floors, we recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes. Credit cards and transit IC cards (like Suica/Pasmo) are accepted for various payments. While much of the information is available via the official app and signage, please note that certain areas may have specific photography rules. No advanced reservations are required, but checking the crowd status is advised.
