The Itsura Coast is a scenic coastal area located in Otsu-machi, Itsura, Kitaibaraki City, Ibaraki Prefecture. The landscape is characterized by a unique topography of approximately 50-meter high cliffs shaped by the relentless waves of the Pacific Ocean, featuring five distinct coves: Kogotsura, Ogotsura, Tsubaki-iso, Nakaiso, and Hashi-iso. Often referred to as the "Matsushima of the Kanto region," this area offers visitors a profound way to experience the sculptural beauty of nature.
This area is famously known as a place beloved by Okakura Tenshin, a pivotal figure in the development of modern Japanese art. Tenshin chose this location as a base for his activities to modernize Japanese painting. Another significant landmark is the Rokkakudo temple, which is said to have been designed by Tenshin. Although the structure was once lost to the tsunami following the Great East Japan Earthquake, it has been faithfully reconstructed to honor its original design. Today, it remains a cherished symbol of the local history and culture.
The most striking feature of the Itsura Coast is the sea cliffs formed by coastal erosion and the unique rock formations resulting from the seabed's composition. Lush black pine trees grow atop the cliffs, creating a stunning visual contrast between the deep blue sea and the green land. As you stroll along the coast, you can observe the diverse expressions of the five coves and witness the intricate geological shapes crafted by nature up close.
As the Itsura Coast is an outdoor scenic area, there are no official closing times. You can enjoy the natural scenery 24 hours a day. It is highly recommended to observe how the ocean's appearance changes with the seasons and weather conditions. However, please exercise caution regarding the weather and wave conditions, as the coastline consists of steep cliffs and rugged terrain.
Visitors can enjoy a relaxing walk along the coastal paths while gazing at the majestic expanse of the Pacific Ocean. The Itsura Coast has been selected as one of the "100 Soundscapes of Japan" and "100 White Sand and Green Pine Beaches of Japan," making it an ideal spot for a peaceful walk accompanied by the soothing sounds of waves and sea breezes. The surrounding area also features various art-related facilities and historical buildings, allowing for a deeper cultural understanding of the region.
The area around Itsura Coast is home to several historical buildings and cultural institutions. This includes museums where you can appreciate works related to Okakura Tenshin and other structures built based on historical designs. Additionally, there are hot spring (onsen) facilities and hotels along the coast, allowing guests to experience local culture while enjoying the breathtaking views.
Since the Itsura Coast is a natural outdoor environment, we recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes and clothing suitable for changing weather. Because the wind can be quite strong along the cliffs and the shoreline, bringing windproof clothing is highly recommended.
