Iwami Tatamigaura is a designated National Natural Monument located in Hamada City, Shimane Prefecture. Situated at the tip of a hilly area rising approximately 50 meters above sea level, it features dramatic sea cliffs and a massive 49,000 m² wave-cut platform (hashokudana). The platform is covered in regular, small cracks that give it the appearance of spread-out tatami mats, earning it nicknames like "Senjojiki" or "Toko-no-ura." It is a place where the raw power of nature and exquisite geometric beauty coexist.
This area has long been celebrated as a representative sight of the Iwami region, even appearing in classical Japanese poetry. The geological layers tell a story of a changing world, where former landmasses transitioned into the seabed. The sandstone layers contain fossils of shells and ancient plants, serving as a "natural museum" that documents the history of the Earth. The site was officially designated as a National Natural Monument on March 25, 1932.
Visitors can discover a variety of natural sculptures at Iwami Tatamigaura. The landscape is dotted with rounded, stool-like rocks (nodules) created by wave erosion, as well as numerous faults and sea caves. The area is also a significant geological site where shell and even whale fossils can be observed within the sandstone layers. The undulating terrain and the textured surfaces of the rocks carved by the sea offer a profound sense of natural artistry.
The scenery changes beautifully depending on the weather and the angle of the sun. On clear days, the contrast between the blue sky, the ocean, and the beige or brown rock surfaces is striking and highly photogenic. The appearance of the wave-cut platform and the tide pools also changes with the tides. For the best experience in observing geological details, visiting during bright daylight hours is highly recommended.
Exploring the natural formations is the main attraction here. You can walk across the vast wave-cut platform to find unique shapes like the "Mushroom Rock" or peer out at the ocean from within a sea cave. Searching for small details, such as shell fossils embedded in the layers or heart-shaped patterns formed by natural erosion, provides a unique and engaging way to connect with the landscape.
The surrounding Hamada area offers various spots to enjoy the natural beauty of Shimane. Besides the coastal views, you may encounter unique local facilities, such as vending machines with specialized features, reflecting the local culture. It is a great area to combine nature observation with local exploration.
