Iwakura Gojo-gawa is a first-class river flowing through western Aichi Prefecture. Renowned for its breathtaking scenery, it has been officially selected as one of Japan's "Top 100 Cherry Blossom Spots." The section within Iwakura City features a spectacular 7.6km stretch where approximately 1,300 cherry trees create a continuous tunnel of blossoms. As spring arrives, the entire cityscape is bathed in a vibrant, celebratory atmosphere that draws visitors from far and wide.
The river originates in Tajimi City, Gifu Prefecture, and flows through Oguchi, Konan, and Iwase before reaching Iwakura. The cherry blossom trees along the banks have been carefully preserved as a vital symbol of the local landscape. The annual "Iwakura Sakura Matsuri" (Cherry Blossom Festival) showcases deep-rooted traditions, such as the "Nonbori-arai" ritual. This unique ceremony involves washing away the paste used to outline koi-nobori (carp streamers) with river water, a beautiful way to pass down local culture. The festival also features traditional float processions, embodying the rich history of the region.
The primary draw is the magnificent arch of cherry blossoms that lines both sides of the river. During peak bloom, the dense canopy creates a dreamlike tunnel, and the reflection of the blossoms on the water's surface is a sight to behold. During the Sakura Matsuri festival, the area features evening illuminations, allowing visitors to experience the ethereal beauty of "yozakura" (night cherry blossoms). Additionally, as the season progresses, the sight of flower petals floating on the river surface provides a poetic and transient beauty unique to this location.
The most spectacular views occur from late March to early April during the peak blooming period. Daytime visits are perfect for strolling under clear blue skies, highlighting the contrast between the blossoms and the sky. For a truly magical experience, we highly recommend visiting in the evening to enjoy the light-up events. The sight of the river covered in a carpet of falling petals during the late-bloom stage is also a highly recommended seasonal spectacle.
Beyond just sightseeing, the Sakura Matsuri offers a chance to feel the pulse of Japanese tradition. Watching demonstrations of the "Nonbori-arai" or observing the colorful float processions provides a rare opportunity to experience local heritage firsthand. Visitors can also enjoy the seasonal atmosphere by visiting nearby eateries along the river area to relax and soak in the spring vibes.
Iwakura Station serves as a very convenient base for your visit. The area around the station features various restaurants and shops within walking distance, making it easy to find a place to rest or dine during your sightseeing tour. The surrounding region also offers various historical sites, making it an excellent addition to a wider Aichi sightseeing itinerary.
While daytime temperatures in spring can be pleasant, the riverside can become quite chilly in the evening or during night illuminations. We recommend bringing a light jacket or wrap. Since parking near the river can be limited, using public transportation is highly recommended. Please be mindful of nature and refrain from touching or breaking any branches to preserve the beautiful scenery.
