Iwakuni Castle is a mountain castle located in Yokoyama, Iwakuni City, Yamaguchi Prefecture. It sits atop Mt. Shiroyama at an altitude of approximately 200 meters, with the Nishi River flowing below acting as a natural moat. The current castle tower (tenshukaku) was reconstructed in 1962 and features a three-story, four-floor structure. The greatest draw is the expansive panoramic view from the observation deck, which allows visitors to look out over Iwakuku City, the iconic Kintai Bridge, the Iwakuni Air Base, and the beautiful islands of the Seto Inland Sea, including Miyajima.
The history of this castle dates back to 1608, when it was built by K家 Yoshiyuki, the first lord of the Iwakuni Clan. Originally, it featured a Momoyama-style architecture with a three-story, four-floor tower. However, following the
