Iwaki River Riverside Park is a nature-rich park located in Itayanagi Town, Kitatsuru District, Aomori Prefecture. The greatest charm of this location lies in the breathtaking contrast between the majestic silhouette of Mount Iwaki and the vibrant cherry blossoms that bloom in spring. Along the banks of the Iwaki River, the park offers a variety of natural expressions depending on the season.
This area has long been blessed with abundant natural beauty. Mount Iwaki, in particular, has drawn many visitors throughout history due to its elegant and striking appearance. The surrounding area is famous for its apple cultivation; in spring, the landscape is uniquely adorned not just with cherry blossoms, but also with the delicate white blossoms of apple trees, a sight deeply rooted in the local culture. The area is also recognized as one of the 'Sakura Pilgrimage' sites within the Tohoku Dream Sakura Road, serving as an important landmark for showcasing the natural beauty of the region.
The park features approximately 99 cherry trees, including various species such as Somei Yoshino, weeping cherry blossoms (Shidarezakura), and Yaezakura. When these bloom simultaneously, the entire landscape is transformed into a spectacular display of color. The backdrop of Mount Iwaki, often capped with lingering snow, creates a stunning visual contrast against the blue sky. Additionally, the sight of nearby apple orchards covered in white blossoms is a signature feature of this location.
The most beautiful period is the cherry blossom season from late April to mid-May, when the full bloom coincides with the majestic view of Mount Iwaki. You can also enjoy the natural scenery in October. A typical visit for a stroll through the park takes about 30 minutes.
Visitors can enjoy a relaxing stroll along the murmuring Iwaki River or engage in landscape photography. The view of cherry blossoms with Mount Iwaki in the background is a highly sought-after subject for photography enthusiasts. Furthermore, nearby facilities like the Apple Museum allow visitors to experience the local agricultural culture.
Near the park, you can visit Kumado Shrine within a few minutes' walk. Other facilities such as the Itayanagi Town Furusato Center (Apple Museum) and local family cottages are also within walking distance, making it an ideal destination for families and tourists wishing to explore both nature and local culture.
