Located at the southern foot of the majestic Mt. Chigamine in the center of Taka Town, Hyogo Prefecture, "Isarigami no Tanada" is a precious scenic spot selected as one of Japan's Top 100 Terraced Rice Fields. The landscape consists of 334 terraced paddies stretching across an elevation of 280m to 430m. The most striking feature is the sophisticated stone masonry used for the embankments. You can observe specialized techniques adapted to the terrain, such as "Tera-zumi" (reverse-slope structures), "Ninjyu" (stepping stones for grass cutting), and "Tobishige" (stone reinforcement). It is a place where nature and human ingenuity harmonize to create a quintessential Japanese landscape.
The history of Isarigami no Tanada is said to date back to the Kamakura period. The name "Isarigami" is believed to be a derivation of "Iwasuwari-kami-yama," another name for Mt. Chigamine. Agriculture utilizing the natural topography has been practiced here since ancient times. While there were modern plans for land development in recent years, a strong movement arose to preserve the traditional scenery. In 1996, the "Isarigami Tanada Preservation Society" was established, and local residents continue to work tirelessly to maintain and protect this traditional landscape.
The highlight of the area is the intricate stone-walled embankments. Rather than simple earthen banks, these stones are piled using advanced techniques, giving the terraces a unique texture and sense of strength. The view is particularly spectacular from above; the rhythmic yet organic arrangement of the paddies is stunning in aerial photography or drone footage. The changing colors of the sky reflected in the water and the shifting colors of the rice plants throughout the seasons offer a unique charm found only here.
The appearance of the terraces changes beautifully with the seasons. You can witness everything from the lush green of the growing season to the brilliant golden hues of the ripening rice. The golden season is especially breathtaking. For the best experience, visit during daylight hours to clearly see the depth and texture of the stone structures. Depending on the season, you may also spot traditional scarecrows in the fields, adding a touch of local life to the scenery.
Beyond sightseeing, you can engage in local agricultural experiences. The area features "Kleingarten Isarigami," a facility offering farm-attached cottages. These include a plot of land with electricity and water, allowing visitors to enjoy gardening or growing seasonal vegetables. These are typically long-term-based, but they offer a way to connect deeply with the local land. Additionally, the famous "Isarigami Tanada Rice" is produced here and can be purchased at local roadside stations.

This includes the historic "Reirei Shrine" and facilities offering local specialties like Ishigaki tea, soba, and Sugihara paper. Other great stops during a drive include "Lavender Park Taka," "Taka Town Leisure Village Park," and the "Michi-no-Eki Sugiharashino Sato Taka."
