Iwai Falls is a waterfall nestled in the mountains of northern Okayama Prefecture. Its most striking feature is its structure, which allows people to walk behind the falling water. This unique layout provides a special experience, as visitors can view the flow of water not just from the front, but from the hidden space behind the veil of water.
The surrounding area is blessed with a rich natural environment. Approximately 100 meters downstream from the falls, a pure spring known as "Iwai" emerges. This spring was selected as one of the "Meisui Hyakusen" (100 Best Waters in Japan) in 1985. Local legends suggest that drinking the spring water brings blessings for fertility and healthy children, making it a deeply cherished site for both locals and visitors.
The greatest allure of Iwai Falls is the ability to access the space behind the waterfall through a massive rock formation. Passing through this natural stone chamber offers a sensation unlike anything in daily life. While the scenery changes beautifully with the seasons, please note that access is currently restricted due to environmental changes and safety concerns. It is essential to check the latest status before your visit.
The scenery around Iwai Falls shifts with the seasons. During winter (late December to early April), access may be impossible due to heavy snow and ice. Conversely, during the seasons when the snow melts and water flows heavily, you can feel the powerful energy of nature. Visiting during daylight hours is recommended to fully appreciate the clarity of the water and the texture of the surrounding rock formations.
Ideally, visitors could walk behind the falls to experience the natural rock formations up close. However, for safety reasons, certain areas—including the forest roads leading to the walking paths and parking areas—are currently closed to the public. This measure was taken to prevent accidents following damage from heavy rain and typhoons. While waiting for future restoration, visitors can still enjoy the breathtaking views of the natural landscape from a distance.
The area around Iwai Falls is surrounded by abundant nature. For instance, the nearby Onbara Plateau offers beautiful alpine plants depending on the season. You may also consider combining a visit with other natural spots like the Okutsu Valley to fully enjoy the natural beauty of northern Okayama.
Since Iwai Falls is located in a mountainous area, be mindful of sudden weather changes and uneven terrain. As access is currently restricted, following local instructions is the most important rule.
