The Iwahashi Senzuka Kofun Cluster, located in Iwashi, Wakayama City, is a collection of ancient burial mounds dating back to the late Kofun period. As a designated Special National Historic Site, the cluster spans a vast area with numerous mounds scattered throughout the landscape. These sites are believed to be associated with the Kii clan, serving as a significant political and cultural center in ancient times.
The cluster primarily consists of mounds constructed during the late 6th century, including keyhole-shaped (zenpo-koen-fun), circular (enpun), and square (hofun) mounds. Circular mounds are the most prevalent. Historically, these sites are linked to the powerful Kii clan. A unique architectural feature is the use of local green phyllite for the stone chambers; the stone's ability to peel into thin plates reflects a distinct architectural style of the Kinokawa river basin area.
The cluster is distributed across several areas, such as the Narugami district (Hanayama sub-group) to the north and the Okazaki district (Ibe Hachiman sub-group) to the south. Observing how the shapes of the mounds harmonize with the natural topography provides a visual understanding of ancient burial customs. Additionally, the adjacent Kii Fudoki no Oka museum displays archaeological and folkloric materials, allowing visitors to learn about the daily lives of people from that era through excavated artifacts.
As an outdoor historical site, the scenery changes with the seasons. Bright daylight hours are ideal for walking and clearly observing the shapes of the mounds and the surrounding topography. The landscape offers a peaceful experience as it shifts with the natural environment throughout the year.
The site is often used for educational purposes, utilizing archaeological and folkloric materials. However, please note that the availability of specific programs or museum operations may change. For example, while traditional craft or fire-making experiences were offered in the past, they may currently be restricted or unavailable due to facility closures or maintenance.
Located right next to the Kofun cluster is Kii Fudoki no Oka, where you can deepen your understanding of ancient life through various exhibits. To the west, you can also find the historic Hinomiyama Jinja and Kunikake Jinja shrines, which share historical connections with the region.
The area is a natural environment with unpaved paths and some sloped terrain. We highly recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes and clothing suitable for outdoor exploration.
