Gandatekyo Gorge, located in Kosaka Town, Gero City, Gifu Prefecture, is a geological wonder formed by andesitic lava flows approximately 54,000 years ago. It is renowned for possessing what is considered the most impressive lava flow cross-section in Japan. As a designated Natural Monument of Gifu Prefecture, the site offers a unique view of a green, flat-topped lava belt stretching across the horizon, clearly visible when driving along the Mt. Ontake Panorama Line. Historically, this formation was once connected to the downstream Ko-Gandate area, but was separated by the erosion of the Sasara Valley, which washed away nearly 300 meters of the lava flow.
The landscape was shaped by intense volcanic activity 54,000 years ago. While the lava flow was once a continuous landmass, the natural process of erosion by the Sasara Valley carved out a 300-meter gap, resulting in the dramatic, disconnected shape seen today. Due to this rare geological structure, it has been officially designated as a Natural Monument of Gifu Prefecture. Its striking appearance has even earned it the nickname "The Green Grand Canyon."
The primary attraction is the sheer, towering andesite rock walls. These walls extend for approximately 17 kilometers upstream, allowing visitors to observe a massive, natural cross-section of the earth's history. When driving the Mt. Ontake Panorama Line, you can enjoy the sweeping view of the lava flow that looks like a vast green belt across the landscape. Additionally, the area features the "Amadori Rock," a unique lava structure reaching about 150 meters in height.
The gorge is generally accessible from late March to mid-December. Please note that during the winter season (January to March), the information center, local shops, and public restrooms are closed. For the best experience, visit during daylight hours to clearly observe the intricate textures of the rock walls and the dramatic lava cross-sections.
Visitors can observe the massive, disconnected lava structures and the immense scale of the rock walls up close. The area features well-maintained paths suitable for walking and nature observation. For a more expansive view, a drive along the Mt. Ontake Panorama Line offers a spectacular way to appreciate the scale of the geological formations.
The area surrounding Gandatekyo Gorge is rich in the natural beauty of Gero City. The Mt. Ontake Panorama Line serves as an excellent driving route, providing breathtaking views through your car window. There are also several other scenic spots throughout the Kosaka area perfect for enjoying the natural landscape.
A fee of 300 JPY is required per person as an Environmental Maintenance Contribution. Please ensure you carry cash for this payment.

Photography is permitted; however, please respect the natural environment and avoid disturbing the site.
We recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes and clothing suitable for light hiking. If you are accompanied by a pet, a leash is mandatory.
Please check the local conditions regarding wheelchair access and path terrain before your visit.
Please keep pets on a leash at all times and carry waste disposal tools (such as a small shovel or plastic bags) to clean up after them. Please take all trash home with you. Be aware that the ambient sounds of nature, such as nearby waterfalls, may change the atmosphere of the area.
