Ittoishi is a massive, historically significant rock located in Yagyu, Nara City, Nara Prefecture. This granite formation measures approximately 8 meters in length, 7 meters in width, and 2 meters in height. Its most striking feature is a clean, diagonal split running through its center. It is famously known as the site where the legendary swordsman Yagyu Muneyori practiced his craft. The site serves as a powerful symbol of the region, where the raw beauty of nature meets profound historical legend.
According to local legend, Yagyu Muneyori (also known as Yagyu Jipusai) practiced his swordsmanship here every night for three years, even battling a Tengu (a mythical mountain goblin). One night, it is said that as he struck out with a single blow, he realized he had actually struck the massive rock instead of the Tengu, leaving the stone split as it remains today. Through this intense training, he is said to have mastered the essence of 'no-sword' and became the founder of the Yagyu Shinkage-ryu school. Throughout the Edo period, the site was revered by the successive lords of the Yagyu Clan. Visitors can still find stone lanterns donated by the Yagyu lords nearby, adding to the weight of history felt at the site.
The primary attraction is the sheer presence of the massive granite rock itself, split perfectly in the middle. The sight of this natural fracture is breathtaking and serves as a visual testament to the power of the legend. Some even claim to see marks resembling Tengu footprints on the surface.
