The Seinaga Ito Memorial Museum is a municipal art museum located in the Izushi district of Toyooka City, Hyogo Prefecture. The museum was established to preserve, research, and honor the achievements of Seinaga Ito, a Western-style painter from Izushi and a recipient of the prestigious Order of Culture. The building's design features a Sukiya-style exterior that blends seamlessly with the traditional architecture of the Izushi townscape, despite its modern concrete structure. The exhibition rooms utilize glass tiles for ceiling lighting, creating an ideal environment to appreciate the vibrant colors of the artworks under soft, natural light.
The museum's history dates back to 1989, when it originally opened as the 'Izushi Municipal Ito Art Museum.' Following municipal mergers and name changes, it became the 'Toyooka Municipal Museum: Seinaga Ito Memorial Museum' in 2014. Seinaga Ito played a pivotal role in the development of modern Japanese Western-style painting, and his works hold significant value in Japanese art history. Beyond being a mere exhibition facility, the museum serves as a vital cultural hub for passing down the artistic legacy of this local master to future generations.
The permanent collection allows visitors to trace the evolution of Ito's artistic journey.
