Yamate Italianissimo Garden is a beautifully manicured Italian-style garden located in the Yamate district of Naka Ward, Yokohama, Kanagawa Prefecture. The area is known as 'Italiamayama' (Italian Hill) because an Italian consulate was established here from 1880 to 1886. The garden's design, featuring geometric water channels and flowerbeds, mimics European garden styles, creating a unique landscape where seasonal plants and historic Western-style buildings harmonize perfectly.
The history of this site dates back to the establishment of the Italian Consulate in the late 19th century. The garden features several historic buildings that have been relocated or reconstructed on-site. For instance, the 'Bluff No. 18' house, characterized by its French tile roof, was moved here in 1993, and the 'Diplomat's House,' a residence from the Meiji era, was installed in 1997. These structures are vital cultural assets that preserve the history of the former foreign settlement. The garden also maintains international ties, evidenced by the roses gifted from its sister city, Lyon, France.
There are several spots within the garden that captivate visitors. The geometric flowerbeds, with their meticulously planned plant arrangements, offer a stunning visual experience. The Metasequoia tree-lined paths provide a lush, natural atmosphere. As the garden is a large outdoor space, we recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes. Please note that there are no trash cans on-site, so please take all your trash home with you.
