Italian Embassy Villa Memorial Park is a beautiful park located on the shores of Lake Chuzenji in Nikko, Tochichi Prefecture. The main villa was designed in 1928 by the renowned American architect Antonin Raymond. Having served as the Italian Embassy until 1997, the site holds significant diplomatic history and is now maintained and opened to the public by the Tochigi Prefecture. The main residence is a registered Tangible Cultural Property, celebrated for its seamless harmony between Western architectural elegance and the surrounding Japanese natural landscape.
The area has a rich history of hosting various foreign embassies, as many diplomats visited the Nikko area during the Meiji era and beyond. During the summer months, it was common for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to relocate to Nikko, making it a prestigious destination for international guests. From 1928 to 1997, the site served as the Italian Embassy, hosting successive Italian ambassadors. Today, the site has been restored and functions as a cultural facility and park that preserves and shares this unique history with the public.
The site consists of two main buildings: the Main Villa and the Sub-Villa. The Main Villa features a living room, terrace, and bedrooms, showcasing original furniture, bedding, fireplaces, and exquisite furnishings from the era. The Sub-Villa serves as the International Resort History Museum, detailing the history of the area as a global summer retreat. The interior and exterior decorations are notable for their use of cedar bark, with diverse ornamental details found on the walls and ceilings. From the Main Villa's terrace, visitors can enjoy panoramic views of Lake Chuzenji, Mount Nikko-Shirane, Mount Hangetsu, Hachodejima, and the pier with Mount Nantai in the distance.
The park is open year-round, offering a different atmosphere with every season. Visitors can enjoy lush greenery in spring and summer, vibrant autumn foliage in the fall, and serene snowy landscapes in winter. To reach the park, you can take a boat cruise on Lake Chuzenji (operating from July to November), with the boat station being a convenient landmark. Visiting during daylight hours is highly recommended to fully appreciate the intricate architectural details and the clarity of the lake views.
Visitors can enjoy leisurely strolls along the well-maintained paths, bridges, and piers within the park grounds. Inside the Main Villa, you can observe the lifestyle of the past through its unique architectural style and period furnishings. The surrounding landscape, including the lake and the surrounding mountains like Mount Nikko-Shirane, provides a stunning backdrop for photography and relaxation.
The adjacent British Embassy Villa Memorial Park is another popular destination. It is common for travelers to visit both sites together to experience the different styles of historic Western-style villas. Other nearby natural landmarks include the famous Kegon Falls and Mount Hangetsu.
As the grounds feature slopes and narrow paths, we highly recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes. Payments can be made via cash or credit card.
