Ishiwari-zakura is a highly distinctive cherry blossom spot located on the grounds of the Morioka District Court in Morioka City, Iwate Prefecture. Its most striking feature is, as the name suggests, an Edohigan cherry tree that has grown by splitting a massive rock. With a trunk circumference of 4.3 meters and a height of 10 meters, this giant tree has wrapped its roots around a 21-meter wide granite boulder. The sight of the tree thriving amidst such harsh conditions is a testament to the power of life, leaving visitors in awe. This cherry tree was designated as a National Natural Monument in 1923 (Taisho 12). Ishiwari-zakura is located on the grounds of the Morioka District Court, but you can view the tree from the public sidewalk even outside of standard office hours. Comfortable walking shoes are recommended for your visit.
