The Irigō Ishibata Rice Terraces are a stunning landscape located in the Irigō district of Mogi Town, Tochigi Prefecture. Selected as one of the "100 Best Rice Terrades in Japan" by the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, these terraces preserve the traditional rural scenery of Japan. These terraced fields, carved into the hillsides, serve not only as agricultural land but also play a vital role in preventing soil erosion and providing a habitat for diverse local flora and fauna. This area represents a beautiful harmony between human civilization and the natural environment.
The history of this area dates back as far as 1561 (Eiroku 4). Historical records from that era mention a community of 22 households and 155 residents. While the region has faced modern challenges such as an aging agricultural population and a lack of successors, the community has fought to preserve its heritage. In August 2000, the "Irigō Rice Terrace Conservation Council" was established to protect this landscape. Today, approximately 180 terraced fields spanning about 5 hectares are meticulously maintained by local residents.
The most striking feature of the rice terraces is their transformation through the seasons. The landscape changes dramatically, supporting a delicate ecosystem of plants and animals. Beyond simple sightseeing, the area offers a deep connection to local culture through the "Rice Terrace Owner Program," which encourages interaction between urban dwellers and the rural community. The appearance of the terraces varies significantly depending on the season. You can enjoy different vistas during the rice planting season in spring and summer, the lush growth of the greenery, and the golden harvest season in autumn. The cycle of agricultural work provides a unique visual rhythm. While the area is an open outdoor landscape accessible at any time, visiting during bright daylight hours allows for the best view of the intricate terrace structures and surrounding vegetation.
A unique way to engage with the area is through the Rice Terrace Owner Program. This program allows participants to experience the rhythm of rural life, including rice planting and harvesting. Additionally, the community holds traditional events such as "Odagake" after the rice harvest, which serves as a way to pass down agricultural traditions and foster community bonds. These activities are essential for preserving both the environment and the local culture.
