Ishigakiyama Castle is a historic castle ruin located in Odawara City, Kanagawa Prefecture. Originally known as Mt. Kasagake, it became known as 'Ishigakiyama' (Stone Wall Mountain) after Toyotomi Hideyoshi built a fortification here during his campaign to conquer Odawara Castle. The site features a massive stone-walled structure using the 'no-zura-zumi' technique, where natural stones are piled without mortar. Today, the area is protected as a National Park and a designated National Historic Site. In 2017, it was officially selected as one of the '100 Famous Japanese Castles.'
In 1590, during the Siege of Odawara, Toyotomi Hideyoshi ordered the construction of this castle to surround and pressure the Odawara stronghold. A famous legend claims the castle was built in a single night—hence the name 'One-Night Castle' (Ichiyo-jo)—due to clever decoys that made it appear as though it was completed instantly. In reality, the construction was a massive undertaking that lasted approximately 80 days. The site serves as a testament to the political and military importance of the era. Beyond its military role, historical records suggest the site hosted tea ceremonies and even received imperial messengers, highlighting its high status.
The most striking feature of Ishigakiyama Castle is its 'no-zura-zumi' stone walls made of natural, unshaped stones. The walls in the area known as 'Ido-kuruwa' are particularly well-preserved and offer a direct look at ancient Japanese masonry techniques. The site consists of several enclosures (kuruwa) including the Honmaru (Main Enclosure), Ninomaru (Second Enclosure/Stables), Sanmaru (Third Enclosure), Minami-kuruwa (South Enclosure), Nishi-kuruwa (West Enclosure), and Ido-kuruwa. Visitors can observe how the fortifications were strategically integrated into the natural topography. Additionally, the discovery of roof tiles at the former keep site provides physical evidence of the grand structures that once stood here.
Located on a ridge at an altitude of approximately 250m, Ishigakiyama Castle offers changing views of the surrounding nature throughout the seasons. The vegetation is particularly beautiful during spring and autumn. While there is no official closing time for the site, we recommend visiting during daylight hours to clearly appreciate the textures of the stone walls and the dramatic changes in the terrain. Please be aware that paths can become slippery depending on the weather.
The primary way to experience the site is through hiking and exploring the ruins on foot. Walking through the various enclosures allows you to physically feel the strategic layout of the ancient fortress. It is a wonderful way to connect with the history of the landscape.
Ishigakiyama Castle is situated within the Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park, surrounded by rich natural beauty.
