Ishidou-ji is a historic Tendai sect temple located in Ishido, Minamiboso City, Chiba Prefecture. As the oldest temple in the Minamiboso region, it has been selected as one of the '500 Charming Spots of Boso.' The expansive grounds are dotted with numerous cultural assets of great historical value, offering a landscape that blends seamlessly with nature. Ishidou-ji offers a different charm in every season. June is particularly special, as the temple grounds are adorned with beautiful blooming hydrangeas. The temple also hosts various traditional events throughout the year, such as the Hatsumode (New Year's prayer) in January, the Setsubun festival in February, and summer festivals in August. On December 31st, visitors can experience the solemn atmosphere of the Joya no Kane (New Year's Eve bell ringing). Visiting during daylight hours is recommended to fully appreciate the intricate details of the architecture and the surrounding nature.
Visitors can experience the spiritual side of Japanese culture through various rituals and ceremonies. For example, Goma prayers (fire rituals for protection, family safety, or business prosperity) are available at specific times. On the 18th of every month, the 'Go-ennichi' market brings a lively atmosphere with food stalls, offering a glimpse into local community life. These events provide a wonderful opportunity to experience Japanese spiritual culture beyond simple sightseeing.
The area surrounding Ishidou-ji is rich with local charm. Near the entrance to the temple's approach (Sando), you can find 'Anto Shokudo' for a local meal. To the south, 'Mikogami Farm' offers local specialties such as fresh tomatoes. The area is also known for its agricultural experiences, including dairy farming and farm work, making it a perfect stop on a tour of Minamiboso's nature and food culture.
The temple grounds are extensive and surrounded by natural terrain. We highly recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes and clothing suitable for outdoor movement.
