The Ishibaya Residence is a historic merchant house located in Kikko-cho, Hirosaki City, Aomori Prefecture, and is officially designated as a National Important Cultural Property. This site is a precious relic that preserves the architectural style estimated to date back to the mid-Edo period. The estate boasts a grand scale, with a front width of 37.9 meters and a depth of 39.6 meters, exuding the dignity of a large-scale wooden structure. A standout feature is the 'komise'—a traditional wooden arcade characteristic of the Tsugaru region. While still serving as a residence, the building allows visitors to observe its historical architecture and gain insight into the local culture.
The Ishibaya family has long carried the name 'Seibei' and has been deeply involved in the local commerce of the region. Historically, the family served as a merchant house handling products within the domain, playing a vital role in the local economy. Based on its structural methods, the building's style is attributed to the mid-Edo period. The main house is believed to have been relocated to its current site in the early 19th century. On February 23, 1973, the site was designated as a National Important Cultural Property in recognition of its immense historical and architectural value. It stands as a symbol of the enduring history and heritage of the region.

The vast spatial configuration, with a length of 18.1 meters and a width of 18.2 meters, illustrates the significant scale of merchant houses from that era. The roof features a sophisticated silhouette, with an 'Irimoya' (hip-and-gable) style on the south side and 'Kirizuma' (gabled) styles on the north and east sides. Leveraging its corner location, the 'komise' (arcades) on the south and west sides serve the traditional function of protecting against rain and snow while adding a charming, historic streetscape. Inside, the layout provides a vivid sense of the daily life and commerce of the past.
