Mishaka-ike Pond is a breathtaking scenic pond located within the Yatsugatake Chushin Kogen Quasi-National Park in Chino City, Nagano Prefecture, at an altitude of approximately 1,500 meters. This location is widely celebrated as the inspiration for the work 'Midori Hibiku' (Echoing Green) by the renowned Japanese painter Kaii Higashiyama. When the water is perfectly still, it acts as a mirror, reflecting the surrounding mountains and trees with such clarity that it deeply moves all who visit. The pond covers an area of approximately 0.1 hectares and reaches a maximum depth of 8 meters, serving as a concentrated essence of natural silence and beauty.
The pond was originally completed in the early Showa era (around 1933) as an agricultural reservoir. Historically, the region faced challenges in agriculture due to the effects of cold water, but the environment was optimized for rice cultivation by adjusting water quality through spring water supplementation. The name 'Mishaka' is said to be derived from the 'Mishayama Mikari Shinji' ritual of the Suwa Grand Shrine, marking this as a sacred land since ancient times. Today, it is a beloved cultural and photographic spot where the natural environment is carefully preserved.
The greatest attraction is the 'mirror reflection' that occurs when there is no wind. The sight of the surrounding larch forests and distant mountains reflected on a flawless, undisturbed water surface is nothing short of a work of art. Visitors can also observe local flora such as bellflowers and lilies, as well as wildlife including ducks, damselflies, and various butterflies. The unique ecosystem is also characterized by the presence of certain mosses that thrive in the specific environment of the pond bed.
The expression of Mishaka-ike changes dramatically depending on the season and time of day. In spring, you can witness the vibrant freshness of new greenery; in summer, the deep silence of the lush forest; in autumn, the brilliant golden hues of fall foliage; and in winter, a serene silver world of snow and ice. Because the visual impact depends heavily on light and wind, the scenery changes with the angle of the sun. Observing the landscape in the clear air of the morning or during the soft light of the late afternoon provides different layers of beauty.
Activities here primarily consist of quiet observation and photography. Immersing yourself in the world of Kaii Higashiyama while facing nature in total silence offers a special escape from daily life. You can safely view the scenery from a close distance via the maintained walking paths (equipped with railings). It is a perfect place to listen to the sounds of nature and find inner peace.
