Irozaki is a significant scenic spot within the Izu Peninsula Geopark, located at the southernmost tip of the Izu Peninsula in Shizuoka Prefecture. The landscape is defined by a rugged coastline shaped by volcanic activity and the topography resulting from the eruption of the Minamisaki volcano. Along the coast, you will find steep cliffs carved by years of wave erosion, while the area known as "Ikenohara" features gentle hills influenced by volcanic processes. This creates a harmonious landscape where natural sculptural beauty meets seasonal flora.
The topography of this region is closely linked to the Minasaki volcano, which erupted approximately 400,000 years ago. Much of the coastline is composed of volcanic ash and lava ejected from submarine volcanoes. The terrain around Irozaki was formed by the flow of lava and the accumulation of volcanic ash. Additionally, the area holds historical significance with sites like Ishimuro Shrine, representing a place where nature and spiritual beliefs have long been intertwined.
The greatest charm of Irozaki lies in its diverse topography that transitions from sea to land. The landscape is a striking contrast between sheer, vertical cliffs and gentle hills where the Korean Rose of Sharon (Yusuge) grows. In particular, viewing the scenery from a sightseeing cruise offers a rare opportunity to observe volcanic geological layers and lava flows that are impossible to see from the land. The view is a complex tapestry of colors, featuring white rock, gray volcanic lava, and reddish-brown scoria.
You can enjoy different expressions of the landscape depending on the season. In the summer (July to August), the Korean Rose of Sharon is in full bloom, offering a beautiful sight especially during the late afternoon. In winter, the clear air provides a sharp, powerful view of the rugged cliffs. Regarding the time of day, approaching the area by sightseeing boat or observing the changing light during sunset are highly recommended points of interest.
There are many ways to experience the natural formations around Irozaki. By taking a sightseeing cruise (Izu Cruise) departing from Irozaki Port, you can observe the Irosumi Park and the dramatic coastline from a maritime perspective. There are also specialized geo-tours, including guided tours by certified Geo-Guides and kayak-based geo-tours, which allow for nature observation based on professional geological knowledge.
The area around Irozaki includes Irosumi Park, a gentle hilly landscape formed as Minasaki volcanic lava filled the valleys.
