IOX-AROSA is a premier ski resort situated on the eastern slope of Mt. Oi in Nanto City, Toyama Prefecture. Through its partnership with Arosa, Switzerland, the resort offers a rare European-style landscape and atmosphere within Japan. The name "IOX" combines "IO" from Mt. Oi and "X" representing unknown possibilities, while "AROSA" honors the Swiss town, creating an international vibe. In winter, guests can enjoy skiing, snowboarding, and unique night skiing sessions via gondola. In summer, the resort transforms into a hub for mountain biking, dog runs, and auto-camping, offering diverse leisure activities throughout the year.
Established in 1990, the resort signed a friendship agreement with Arosa, Switzerland, in 1991. This partnership led to the development of European-style facilities such as cozy cottages and a chapel, establishing its reputation as a "Swiss-style ski resort" in Japan. The completion of the "IOX Wald" Swiss-style cottages in 1992 solidified its foundation as a full-scale resort destination. Beyond sports, the resort has a rich cultural history, hosting events like vocal music seminars. Recently, in 2023, the resort continued to evolve by completing new mountain terraces and dog runs to meet modern leisure-seeking needs.
The greatest draw is the dynamic course layout utilizing significant elevation changes. Guests can enjoy long-distance cruising over a total length of 3,100m, with smooth transport via gondola. Winter visitors can experience one of the few night skiing sessions in Japan using a gondola. From the upper slopes, you can enjoy a breathtaking view of the Tonami Plain's traditional scattered-settlement landscape (Sankyo Village) blanketed in snow. In summer, the scenery changes completely as the resort becomes a destination for mountain biking, motor sports in the large parking areas, and dog-friendly activities.
Winter (December–March) is the peak season for skiing and snowboarding. January and February are particularly recommended for stable snow quality and long-distance runs. For a magical experience, try night skiing (approx. 17:30–21:00) under illuminated lights. Summer (June–September) is ideal for outdoor enthusiasts, featuring mountain biking, dog runs, and auto-camping in the refreshing highland air. In autumn, the area also becomes beautiful for viewing seasonal flora like yellow cosmos.
A wide range of seasonal leisure is available. Winter focuses on skiing, snowboarding, and gondola-assisted night skiing. The resort is family-friendly, featuring the "Iotti Land" indoor playground and the "IOX Kurum" hot spring facility. During the off-season, guests can enjoy nature through mountain biking, dog runs, and camping at the auto-camping grounds. The location also serves as an excellent base for hiking and mountain climbing.
Located in Nanto City, the resort is surrounded by the historic and beautiful scenery of traditional scattered settlements. It also serves as a gateway to Toyama's rich natural environment, including the nearby Tateyama mountain range and its world-class limestone caves. During the winter season, seasonal buses from Toyama City may be available for easier access.
When visiting in winter, please prepare heavy thermal wear, gloves, goggles, and your preferred ski or snowboard gear. Rental shops are available on-site, so you can visit even without your own equipment. For payments, cash, PayPay, and some credit cards are accepted. If using the dog run, please keep your dog on a leash and follow local etiquette. While English support varies by facility, basic signage is available. We recommend checking in advance for rentals or specific facility usage.
