Ioki Cave is a natural sea cave located in Aki City, Kochi Prefecture. This cavern was formed by wave erosion during an era when the surrounding area was part of the sea. Stepping into this space—approximately 5m high, 4m wide, and 40m long—feels like traveling back tens of thousands of years into a prehistoric world. The cave leads toward a valley where water can be seen flowing even during normal conditions. Additionally, shell fossils can be observed on the cave walls, serving as a precious geological record of Earth's history.
The most striking feature of this site is the dense community of ferns surrounding the cave. The walls and the banks of the nearby valley are home to a diverse variety of plants, primarily tropical ferns. Specifically, about 40 species have been identified, including species like the Adiantum, Dryopteris, and various others. The coexistence of such a high number of fern species in one location is an extremely rare phenomenon, and this fern community is designated as a National Natural Monument. It is carefully preserved as a historical landscape shaped by the forces of nature.
The charm of Ioki Cave lies in its unique topography and vegetation. As you move from the entrance into the depths of the cave, the scenery shifts constantly. The shell fossils on the walls and the trickling water serve as vivid reminders of the area's oceanic past. The lush fern community surrounding the cave offers a vibrant, life-filled landscape rarely seen in daily life. The harmony between the natural rock formations and the thriving plants provides a sense of profound tranquility to every visitor.
Preparation is essential when exploring Ioki Cave. Because the terrain can be unstable and uneven, we strongly recommend wearing sturdy walking shoes or hiking boots. If you visit after rain or during rainy weather, the ground may be muddy and slippery; bringing rubber boots is a practical idea. During the summer, as wild animals like pit vipers may be present, please avoid wearing sandals and opt for footwear that protects your feet. While there is no admission fee for general exploration and no reservation is required, please respect the environment by not collecting plants and ensuring you take all trash back with you.
If you choose to use a guided tour or specific programs, payments are typically accepted via Cash or PayPay. For standard exploration (which is free of charge), no payment is necessary.

Due to the highly unstable and uneven terrain, Ioki Cave is not suitable for wheelchairs or walkers. Please exercise caution as there are many steps and bumps throughout the path.
