Inomata no Hyakuhatto is a traditional ritual held on the ridge of Dozenzan Mountain in Inomata, Misato Town, Saitama Prefecture. Every year on the night of August 15, fire is lit upon 108 distinct mounds (tsuka). This event is officially designated as a National Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property, preserving the authentic forms of Japanese traditional ceremonies. The unique method of lighting fires atop these 108 mounds is a rare and striking feature among various Obon-related traditions in Japan.
The origins of this ritual are tied to the legend of honoring the spirit of Inomata Kohei Noritsuna, a leader of the Musashi Shichito (Seven Musashi Clans). The tradition has been passed down for centuries and is deeply rooted in the local community. The practice of lighting fires on the mounds is a strong expression of "Tsuka-shinko" (mound worship) used to soothe spirits, making it a highly significant event in a historical and spiritual context. It serves as a vital testament to the unique local beliefs and history of the region.
The most spectacular sight is the 108 flickering lights scattered along the ridge of Dozenzan Mountain as darkness falls. This event is held exclusively on the night of August 15 each year. The main activities take place during the evening (expectedly from 18:00 to 21:00). Since it is held in mid-August, the weather will be very hot; please prepare for the summer heat even during the night. You can enjoy the entire sequence of events, from the traditional lighting of the fires to the vibrant fireworks display.
The primary experience is witnessing the profound traditional ritual. You can observe the local youth lighting the fires and watch the way the light spreads across the mountain-side. Following the ritual, you can enjoy a massive fireworks display with many other visitors. The venue is the Inomata area of Misato Town. The surroundings of Dozenzan Mountain are rich in nature, and the area attracts many people during the festival season. The beautiful natural landscapes of Misato provide a serene backdrop for experiencing this deep cultural heritage.
Most food and beverage vendors around the venue are expected to be cash-only. Since credit card or IC card availability is limited in the immediate vicinity, we highly recommend carrying enough cash for your purchases.
As this is a traditional local ritual, English-speaking staff and English signage will be very limited. It is helpful to research the ritual's significance in advance to fully appreciate the experience.
No advance reservations are required to attend. However, with over 20,000 visitors expected, the area will be very crowded. We recommend arriving early and planning your transportation in advance.
Since the event is held in mid-August, wear light, breathable clothing. As the ritual takes place near a mountain ridge, there may be unpaved paths; please wear comfortable walking shoes. It is also useful to bring insect repellent and a flashlight for moving around in the dark.
