The Kitakyushu Museum of Natural History & Human History is a public museum located in Yahatahigashi-ku, Kitakyushu City, Fukuoka Prefecture. This unique facility integrates the elements of natural history, human history, and archaeology, while also incorporating the industrial history that supported the growth of 20th-century Kitakyushu. Its greatest appeal is the ability to learn about the grand timeline of the universe—from the birth of the solar system to the modern era—through both natural and human-centric perspectives.
The museum's history is deeply connected to the Kitakyushu Expo held in 2001. The building, constructed as part of the expo venue, officially opened on November 3, 2002. Originally, the natural history, history, and archaeology collections existed as separate entities, but they were unified into this comprehensive institution to provide a broader perspective, including the 'History of Industry.' The museum has undergone various updates, such as in 2013 and 2023, to celebrate anniversaries and ensure a cutting-edge exhibition environment.
The highlight of the museum is the dinosaur exhibition in the Natural History section. The life-sized reconstruction of the T-Rex skeleton is truly awe-inspiring. In the vast exhibition space known as the 'Earth Mall,' visitors can experience the dynamic history of life on a massive scale. The History section focuses on the theme of 'Paths,' showcasing the movement of people and cultural exchange across East Asia. Additionally, the museum features unique exhibits related to space and the origins of the Earth, including lunar rock displays that were once part of the Space World collection.
While the museum is enjoyable year-round, we recommend visiting in the early morning to enjoy the exhibits at a more relaxed pace. If you are interested in special exhibitions, which offer fresh discoveries different from the permanent collection, please check the official website in advance. Please note that the museum is closed during the New Year holidays and for approximately one week in late June for pest control maintenance.
Inside the museum, you can visually trace the footsteps of Earth and humanity. The scale of the dinosaur skeletons and the industrial artifacts is something that photos and diagrams simply cannot convey. It is an incredibly enriching educational experience for families, students, and travelers interested in natural sciences and history.
