Ino no Tanada is a stunning rice terrace landscape located in Akiota Town, Aki District, Hiroshima Prefecture, that preserves the quintessential scenery of old Japan. It was selected as one of the "100 Best Rice Terraces in Japan" by the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries in 1999, and gained international recognition in 2015 when it was featured in CNN's "Japan's 31 Most Beautiful Places." The landscape is characterized by 324 terraced fields overlapping in a bowl-shaped basin at an altitude of 500m to 550m. For many years, local efforts have focused on revitalizing the area while preserving this precious landscape, making it a focal point for both domestic and international visitors interested in traditional Japanese rural culture.
The history of this land is deeply rooted in the past, with land reclamation estimated to have begun during the late Heian period or the Kamakura period. The techniques used to build the stone walls supporting the terraces are believed to be linked to the technology of the Kikukawa clan, who ruled this region during the Sengoku and Azuchi-Momoyama periods. Many of the existing stone walls were constructed approximately 500 years ago, offering a profound sense of historical weight. Records from the 1638 Hiroshima Clan land survey show that the scale of the cultivated land was nearly identical to the current terraces, demonstrating how long this landscape has been maintained. Today, local community events are held to foster interaction with urban residents and ensure the continuation of traditional farming methods.
The primary attraction is the breathtaking view of the multi-layered rice terraces spreading across the basin, surrounded by steep mountains. The stone walls are made of granite and are characterized by a powerful, vertically stacked structure. Visitors can enjoy the view from a dedicated observatory, and the site is well-equipped with a parking lot and restrooms. Depending on the season, the terraces offer a completely different face—from the shimmering water in spring to the lush greenery of summer and the golden hues of autumn. It is a place where you can truly feel the essence of the Japanese countryside through the ongoing preservation efforts by local residents.

Every year, the area hosts a "Rice Planting Experience" in June and a "Rice Harvesting Experience" in October. These events are designed to encourage interaction between local residents and visitors, providing a rare opportunity to learn and experience traditional farming techniques.
