Located in Bungo-ono City, Oita Prefecture, Inazumi Suichu Shonando is a limestone cave formed during the Paleozoic era approximately 300 million years ago. The cave's unique underwater structure was created when the Nakatsunomure River valley was submerged by pyroclastic flow deposits from a massive eruption of the Aso volcano roughly 300,000 years ago. Inside, you will find world-class geological wonders such as underwater stalactites, coral stones, bell holes, and helictites. The cave is well-equipped for tourism with sturdy metal handrails and non-slip pathways. The temperature remains a constant 16°C (61°F) throughout the year, making it a perfect destination for those seeking a cool escape from the summer heat.

History & Cultural Background

The history of this cave dates back 300 million years to the Paleozoic era. A significant geological event occurred approximately 300,000 years ago when the eruption of the Aso volcano filled the Nakatsunomure River canyon with over 70 meters of pyroclastic flow deposits, effectively submerging the cave. Over many millennia, much of this sediment eroded away, leaving the upper half of the cave exposed to the air. This natural process has created a unique environment where both underwater and aerial limestone formations coexist. The water flowing through the cave is part of a natural circulation system, originating from the Shiratani riverbed approximately 4km upstream.

The interior offers a breathtaking, ethereal landscape illuminated by strategic lighting. The contrast between the underwater stalactites and the exposed aerial formations provides a view found nowhere else. Blue lights are placed along the walkways to highlight the water surfaces and rock faces, creating a dreamlike atmosphere. Since the cave maintains a stable temperature of 16°C (61°F), it is a great destination regardless of the season. It is particularly recommended during the hot summer months as a cooling retreat. While the facility is open during the New Year holidays, please note that certain activities, such as the outdoor sauna, have specific seasonal schedules (for example, starting from January 6th). The lighting effects inside the cave create a different mood depending on the time of visit, emphasizing the dramatic contrast between light and shadow.
