Itako Ryokuchi is a comprehensive park covering a total area of 66.2 hectares, located in Meito Ward, Nagoya City, Aichi Prefecture. It is affectionately known as the 'Forest of Itako.' The area is characterized by its abundant water-related landscapes, including terraced rice paddies, wetlands, and ponds. It has been officially certified as a nature-symbiotic site where visitors can learn about the vital mechanisms of the water cycle. Despite its proximity to the city, the park offers a serene environment filled with thickets and tranquil waterfront views.
The region was originally part of the Owari Hills, a landscape once defined by vast fields and woodlands. The name 'Itako' is derived from the former Itako Village in the old Ito District. Development of the park as an urban green space began on February 15, 1958, following a structured urban planning initiative. Additionally, due to its geography and openness, the area was designated as a wide-area evacuation site following the 1995 Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake.
The park features various zones designed to utilize the natural topography. In the terraced rice paddy area, you can observe local community groups managing water and mowing grass, showcasing the traditional methods of maintaining the natural landscape. Other notable features include the Tsukanoiri Pond, Ibori Pond, and the Hannoki (Alder) wetlands. The well-maintained walking trails allow visitors to get up close and personal with the various elements of the local ecosystem.
While the scenery is beautiful year-round, the wetlands and rice paddies offer different charms depending on the season. Popular routes include the path through the weeping cherry tree grove in the north and the wetland trails. In May, the park often hosts special events such as nature observation sessions and bamboo craft workshops (please check the schedule in advance for specific dates and availability).
There are various programs centered around the theme of nature. These include guided walks to learn about the satoyama environment, sessions for finding small creatures in the rice paddies, and hands-on bamboo crafting using harvested bamboo. These activities are designed to deepen your understanding of the natural environment and traditional Japanese craftsmanship.
Itako Ryokuchi is located in Meito Ward, Nagoya, bordering Nagakute City. It is easily accessible from the urban center, making it a perfect destination for a quick escape into nature from the city.
As you will be walking through natural terrain, we highly recommend wearing comfortable, active clothing. If you are participating in a nature observation event, please bring clothes that can get dirty, a hat, and plenty of water. Bringing items like gloves, boots, or a magnifying glass can also enhance your experience. To protect this precious environment, please follow all park rules, carry your trash back with you, and maintain a quiet presence during your visit.
