Okawachiyama is a historic porcelain production center located in Imari City, Saga Prefecture, with roots stretching back to the Edo period. It once served as the official kiln for the Nabeshima clan of the Saga Domain, producing the highly prestigious and high-quality 'Nabeshima-yaki' porcelain. In this quiet village surrounded by mountains, approximately 30 pottery studios continue to inherit and preserve a unique porcelain culture through traditional manufacturing methods. Throughout the town, porcelain sculptures are placed as art pieces, creating a landscape where nature and art exist in perfect harmony.
The history of this area dates back to the Edo period. During that time, it was a production hub for porcelain subject to extremely strict quality control—so much so that the techniques were considered 'top secret' and not to be shared outside the domain. This high-quality porcelain was highly valued as a gift for the Shogun and various feudal lords. Today, the area remains a place to learn about Japan's advanced ceramic culture, with sites like the Nabeshima Clan Kiln Park preserving the historical structures and atmosphere of the era.
There are many enchanting spots to explore in Okawachiyama. First, at the Naboshima Clan Kiln Park, you can see the historical landscape, including checkpoints that once guarded the secret production methods, climbing kiln ruins (such as Kiyohara Kiln), and reconstructions of traditional potter's houses, offering a glimpse into the life and technology of the past. Additionally, porcelain sculptures are integrated into the scenery throughout the town, making every corner a photo opportunity.
Another unique charm is the auditory experience. The sound of the 14 Imari-ware wind bells installed at the 'Meotoshi no To' (Spouse Tower) has been selected as one of the '100 Soundscapes of Japan,' bringing a sense of serenity to all who visit. Okawachiyama reveals a different face with each season. In Spring (around April), the 'Kiln Market' brings a lively atmosphere to the village. In Summer (mid-June to August), the 'Wind Bell Festival' is held, allowing visitors to enjoy the refreshing sounds of wind bells and the seasonal mood. In Autumn (around November), the 'Nabeshima Clan Kiln Autumn Festival' offers a chance to experience traditional culture in a calm setting. During Winter, events like the 'Imari Candle Christmas' may also take place, ensuring diverse ways to enjoy the area year-round.
In Okawachiyama, you can do more than just observe; you can learn through hands-on experiences. Nearby pottery studios (such as Seira, Aoyama Kiln, Hata Man Toen, and Kosen Kiln) offer pottery classes and workshop tours. You can observe the traditional porcelain-making process up close or even try your hand at creating your own work.
