Fukuchi-in is a temple with a deep history reaching back to the Nara period. It is said to be the successor to the Kiyomizu-dera of Heijo-kyo (Nara), which was bestowed upon the monk Genjo by Emperor Shomu. During the Kamakura period, the temple was revitalized through the cooperation of influential monks such as Eison of Saidai-ji and Jitsushin of Daijo-in, and its legacy continues to this day. The temple grounds offer a majestic space that allows visitors to feel the profound weight of history.
The roots of this temple lie in the relationship between the high priest Genjo and Emperor Shomu during the Nara period. Following the lineage of the historic Kiyomizu-dera in Heijo-kyo, the temple was later restored through the efforts of prominent monks from the Saidai-ji temple during the Kamakura period. It has long established itself as a significant center for local faith and culture.
The most breathtaking sight is the main deity, the Jizo Bosatsu seated statue. This statue is designated as an Important Cultural Property and boasts an overwhelming scale, standing at a total height of 6.6 meters including its pedestal. Its massive presence leaves a lasting impression on all who visit.
