Imamura Catholic Church (Imamura Catholic Church) is a historic Catholic sanctuary located in Oita Town, Mitai District, Fukuoka Prefecture. Completed in 1913, this architectural gem is characterized by its striking Romanesque-style red brick exterior and twin towers. Designated as a National Important Cultural Property of Japan, it is a highly precious example of brick-built church architecture in the country. The structure serves as a powerful symbol of the history and faith of the people who once preserved their beliefs in secret.
The history of this area traces back to the era of the "Kakure Kirishitan" (Hidden Christians) during the Edo period. In 1867, the existence of hidden believers in the Imamura district was rediscovered by the faithful of Urakami. Following the restoration of orthodox Catholic worship, the current cathedral was constructed under the plan of Father Honda. The construction was supported by donations from abroad—particularly Germany—and the dedicated labor of local parishioners. The history of the site is also marked by the loss of its original bells, which were requisitioned during World War II. The cathedral stands as a testament to the endurance of faith, international support, and local devotion.
The most striking feature is its unique architectural style. The Romanesque exterior, featuring twin hexagonal towers, was modeled after the former Urakami Cathedral in Nagasaki, making it a rare and distinctive brick structure in the Kyushu region. The interior details are equally exquisite, featuring French stained glass, 14 sacred paintings depicting the Passion of Christ, and pillars crafted from local cedar from Mount Takara. Please be aware that due to ongoing seismic reinforcement work, access to the interior is currently restricted.
You can enjoy the historic atmosphere of the cathedral throughout the year. The red brick texture and the sculptural depth of the architecture are particularly beautiful when viewed during the soft light of the morning or late afternoon. As seismic reinforcement work has been underway since June 2022, please note that you may not be able to enter the building. We recommend spending a quiet, contemplative moment admiring the exterior and the surrounding serene environment.
As the building is currently undergoing preservation and restoration, regular Mass attendance and interior tours are limited. The primary experience is a "historical exploration"—observing the exterior architecture and learning about the profound history of the Hidden Christians. Walking through the quiet streets of the surrounding town allows for a spiritual journey, tracing the footsteps of the faithful who protected their heritage for centuries.
The area around Oita Town is filled with historical landscapes. There are various spots nearby where you can encounter local culture and historic scenery. After visiting the cathedral, we recommend a leisurely stroll to enjoy the peaceful atmosphere of the town.
As the cathedral is a place of worship and a significant cultural monument, please act with respect. We recommend wearing modest clothing (avoid overly revealing or flashy attire). Please strictly observe all signs and do not enter any restricted areas marked due to the ongoing construction. Additionally, please respect the local residents by keeping noise to a minimum and maintaining a quiet demeanor.
