Imaihama Beach is a breathtakingly beautiful coastline located in Kawazu Town on the Izu Peninsula, Shizuoka Prefecture. It is celebrated as one of the three most beautiful beaches in the Izu region, alongside Yumigahama in Minami-Izu and Shirahama in Shimoda. The most striking feature is its exceptional water clarity, which has earned a top-tier 'AA' water quality rating, paired with a vast, shallow white sandy beach. During the summer season, the beach is officially managed as a swimming area with professional lifeguards on duty, ensuring a safe and relaxing environment for visitors. The area also offers a wonderful resort atmosphere, with various hotels and traditional Japanese inns (ryokan) nearby to support your seaside stay.
The coastline of this area has long been cherished as part of the natural beauty of the Izu Peninsula. Today, it has developed into a popular tourist destination that preserves its lush natural scenery while offering modern resort-style amenities. The surrounding Kawazu area is famous for its seasonal beauty, such as the Kawazu cherry blossoms in spring and the nearby Nanataki Waterfalls, creating a deep connection between the coastal culture and the changing seasons of the region.
The greatest draw of Imaihama Beach is its pristine shoreline and expansive white sand. The long beach stretches approximately 900 meters, and because the water is shallow, the waves remain gentle and calm. At certain times, especially during low tide, you can discover fascinating tide pools near the rocky areas at the southern end. The ever-changing landscape of the coast makes it a fantastic spot for photography. During the summer, the beach comes alive with energy as beach huts (umi-no-ie) and shower facilities become available for visitors.
The peak season for swimming is typically from late July to late August, when lifeguards are stationed to monitor the water. Outside of the summer months, the area is perfect for quiet, peaceful strolls along the shore. You can enjoy different facets of the region throughout the year: the famous Kawazu cherry blossoms in spring, swimming in summer, and the serene, contemplative coastal scenery in autumn and winter. The late afternoon is also a magical time for photography, as the shifting light dramatically changes the color of the ocean and the landscape.
In addition to swimming, the beach occasionally hosts events like
