7 min readOverview & Charm
Ikoma Kogen is a vast, beautiful plateau spanning approximately 90,000 square meters in Kobayashi City, Miyazaki Prefecture, with the majestic Kirishima mountain range as its backdrop. The landscape changes beautifully with the seasons: vibrant poppies in spring, refreshing hydrangeas in summer, and elegant cosmos in autumn. The area is well-equipped with facilities such as a cafe and a dedicated dog run, allowing visitors to relax and stroll through nature at their own pace.
History & Cultural Background
The region has long been cherished for its rich, untouched natural beauty. Situated at the foot of the Kirishima mountain range, the area maintains a unique and fertile ecosystem. Various events are held throughout the year to coincide with the blooming of seasonal flowers, serving as a cultural hub to celebrate and share the natural splendor of the region with visitors.

Main Highlights
The flora changes dramatically throughout the year. From mid-April, you can enjoy roughly 150,000 California and Iceland poppies. In June, the hydrangeas take center stage, followed by Kochia in mid-September, and a spectacular display of approximately 1 million cosmos flowers starting in early October. The various designated viewpoints throughout the park are perfect for photography enthusiasts looking to capture the landscape.
Seasonal Recommendations
- Spring (April–May): Best for viewing colorful poppies.
- Early Summer (June): Ideal for enjoying hydrangeas.

For the best experience, visit during daylight hours when the colors are most vivid. Some seasonal events or special evening programs may also be held depending on the time of year.
