Guide
Ikeyama Suigen is a vital water source located in Aso District, Kumamoto Prefecture, and has been officially selected as one of the "100 Best Waters" by the Ministry of the Environment. The greatest charm of this location lies in the overwhelming energy of the water and the lush, deep forest that surrounds it. With an incredible discharge rate of 30 tons per minute, this spring not only supports local agriculture and daily life but is also recognized for its exceptional quality as a source for drinking water.
The spring water maintains a consistent temperature of approximately 13.5°C (56.3°F) throughout the year. Combined with the soft sunlight filtering through the canopy, it creates a landscape of incredible transparency. The water is so clear that you can easily see the rocks and plants at the bottom, offering a sense of profound tranquility that helps visitors forget the bustle of daily life.
This site has been deeply rooted in the lives of local residents since ancient times. The water has been cherished for agriculture and domestic use, becoming an integral part of the regional culture. Even today, its purity is highly valued, serving as a vital resource for the next generation. The presence of massive trees, some over 200 years old, tells the story of a natural sanctuary that has been protected for centuries. The water eventually flows into the Yamaga River, joining the Takai and Ono Rivers before reaching Beppu Bay, marking the beginning of Kumamoto's rich water cycle.
The most striking sight is the continuous, roaring flow of water. The surface of the spring reflects the deep greenery of the forest, creating a beautiful gradient from emerald green to deep forest hues. You can also enjoy the unique view of the traditional wooden structures (water collection points) that harmonize beautifully with the natural environment.
In the forest, the contrast between light and shadow—created by sunlight filtering through the leaves—offers stunning visual moments. Because the water is exceptionally clear, observing the moss and aquatic plants on the riverbed is a unique pleasure.
While beautiful year-round, the scenery changes with the seasons. From spring to summer, the lush greenery makes the water appear even more vibrant and refreshing. In autumn, the changing colors of the surrounding trees add a beautiful touch to the water's reflection.
We recommend visiting during the morning hours when sunlight pierces through the trees, highlighting the water's transparency. While the area is accessible 24 hours a day, early morning is the best time if you wish to enjoy the silence and the sounds of nature without crowds.
Visitors can experience true "healing" through nature. Listening to the sound of the spring in this quiet environment is a perfect way to reduce stress. Please note that because this water is used for drinking, strict rules must be followed to protect the water quality.
Around Ikeyama Suigen, you can find several other spots to enjoy the nature of Aso, such as the beautiful Ogatana Rice Terraces, Higotai Park with its seasonal flowers, and the vast Saneai Highland. These areas are perfect for driving or hiking tours.
