Ikishima is a small, fascinating island located approximately 7km off the coast of the Sotome district in Nagasaki City. It once thrived as a massive undersea coal mine, playing a vital role in supporting the rapid industrial growth of modern Japan. Although it closed in 2001 as the last coal mine in Kyushu, it remains a significant site of industrial heritage that attracts visitors from around the world. The island is dotted with various mining-related facilities and structures that tell the story of its bustling past.
The history of Ikishima's undersea mining began in 1952. By 1959, commercial production was in full swing, and the mine eventually expanded into a massive network with a total tunnel length of approximately 90km, reaching as far as Hikoshima. However, due to the global energy revolution and competition from foreign coal, the mine officially closed its doors in 2001, marking the end of an era for Kyushu's coal industry. While the island is now a quiet place, many of the buildings and facilities that once supported a population of up to 7,700 people remain, serving as a testament to its former prosperity.
The highlight of any visit is the "Ikishima Coal Mine Experience Tour." This rare opportunity allows you to ride an electric mine cart through the tunnels, guided by actual former coal miners. Ikishima offers different charms depending on the season. The months of April, May, October, and November are particularly recommended, as the weather is stable and pleasant for walking around the island and enjoying the ferry ride.
