Ikeda Wine Castle (Ikeda Town Grape and Wine Research Institute) is a unique facility located in Ikeda Town, Nakagawa District, Hokkaido. Designed to resemble a medieval European castle, it was established in 1963 as Japan's first winery founded by a local municipality. The facility serves as both a production site for unique wine varieties and a major tourist attraction. The grounds include exhibition facilities to learn about the winemaking process, a shopping area, a restaurant, and an observation terrace offering sweeping views of the Tokachi Plain.
The facility's journey began in 1963 when it obtained a license for fruit liquor manufacturing. The iconic "Wine Castle" structure was completed in 1974, establishing a tradition of winemaking using locally grown grapes. For decades, it has been a cornerstone of the Tokachi region's wine culture, focusing on original variety development and technical excellence. The site also features the "DREAMS COME TRUE VINEYARD," adding a layer of cultural fusion between the local community and the entertainment industry.
The facility offers diverse experiences across several levels. On the B2 level, you can observe the barrel and bottle aging processes, as well as the production of sparkling wines in the cellar. The B1 level features a museum with informative panels detailing winemaking history and techniques. The 1st floor houses a shopping area filled with Tokachi wines and local specialties, including windows that look into the brandy distillery. The 2nd floor contains a library of books related to wine and grapes, while the 3rd floor (Castle Master's Room and Hall) displays various prestigious awards. The top floor features a rooftop observation terrace that provides a stunning 360-degree view of the vast Tokachi Plain.
While the facility is open year-round, the scenery changes beautifully with the seasons. From summer to autumn, the area is vibrant with the grape cultivation and harvest seasons. A particularly recommended time is late afternoon; the view from the rooftop terrace is so spectacular that it has been selected as one of the "100 Best Sunsets in Japan." We recommend visiting during the bright daylight hours for the exhibitions and shopping, and arriving in the evening to enjoy the sunset.
Visitors can deepen their knowledge of wine through the various educational exhibits. You can enjoy reading in the library or experience the local wine culture through tasting services (subject to availability). The 1st-floor shop is perfect for purchasing unique local products. Additionally, the restaurant floor offers a culinary experience featuring local delicacies such as Tokachi beef.
The facility is surrounded by the vast, picturesque farmlands of the Tokachi Plain. Nearby landmarks like "DCTgarden IKEDA" further promote the region's agricultural and wine-related culture. The area is an excellent destination for scenic drives or cycling tours.
As the facility involves movement between different floors and levels, comfortable walking shoes are highly recommended. Please observe quiet manners in the exhibition and restaurant areas. Payments can be made via cash, various credit cards, and most major IC cards. While no prior reservation is required for standard entry, it is advisable to check ahead for group visits or special events.
