Ikaho Onsen is one of Japan's most iconic hot spring destinations, located in Shibukawa, Gunma Prefecture. Its most striking feature is the "Ishidan-gai" (Stone Step Street), a 365-step staircase built on a steep slope. Along this path, you will find traditional ryokan (inns), souvenir shops, local eateries, and even traditional shooting galleries, creating a nostalgic atmosphere. The area is famous for two distinct types of spring water: the mineral-rich "Kogane-no-yu" (Golden Water) and the gentle "Shirogane-no-yu" (Silver Water). As you wander through the bustling streets, you can feel the vibrant energy of this historic hot spring town.
The history of Ikaho Onsen is deeply rooted in Japanese tradition, with its name appearing in the ancient poetry collection "Manyoshu." During the Edo period, the management of the hot springs was a highly structured system. In more recent history, the area became a retreat for intellectuals and artists, including famous figures like the poet Takehisa Yumeji and the novelist Natsume Soseki. The area also holds a prestigious status, having hosted members of the Imperial Family. One of its unique cultural landmarks is the former residence of the Hawaiian Kingdom Minister, which serves as a testament to the town's historical international connections.
The heart of the town is the 365-step stone staircase. Walking up the steps while exploring the surrounding shops and traditional inns is a quintessential Ikaho experience. At the top of the stairs lies the serene Ikaho Shrine. For those looking to enjoy the hot springs more casually, there are several public bathhouses, such as "Ishidan-no-yu" located along the stairs, and "Ikaho Rotenburo" near the spring source. For a panoramic view, take the ropeway up to Miharu Station at an altitude of 955 meters, offering a stunning vista of the surrounding natural landscape.
Ikaho Onsen reveals a different face with every season. The scenery is particularly beautiful during the fresh greenery of spring and the vibrant colors of autumn. The area around Kajika Bridge is especially enchanting when illuminated at night, creating a magical atmosphere for an evening stroll. You can also enjoy modern touches, such as the ropeway experience featuring the character Ikaho Yanagi, blending traditional charm with contemporary hospitality.

Mount Haruna is a popular nearby destination for nature lovers, and the area around Mizusawa Kannon is famous for its delicious Mizusawa Udon noodles. Additionally, the area around Kaminoyama Park, accessible via the ropeway, offers a wonderful way to connect with the natural beauty of Gunma.
Since the Ishidan-gai consists of many steep steps, we highly recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes. It is also wise to be prepared for changing weather conditions. Regarding payments, please note that some local shops and facilities may require cash, so it is helpful to have some on hand. When visiting public baths, please be mindful of local etiquette and respect the communal space.
