The Idemitsu Museum of Arts (Moji) is a cultural landmark situated in the scenic Mojiko Retro district of Kitakyushu, Fukuoka. Deeply connected to the legacy of Idemitsu Sazo, the museum displays a highly curated collection of art. The building itself features a sophisticated modern design, blending reddish-brown brick tiles with white concrete, harmonizing beautifully with the surrounding nostalgic streetscape. The primary focus of the collection is Japanese calligraphy and paintings, alongside exquisite Chinese and Japanese ceramics. The museum hosts approximately 5 to 6 major exhibitions per year, each centered around a unique theme to showcase masterworks.
The museum was established to preserve and display the collection of Idemitsu Sazo, the founder of Idemitsu Kosan. Many of the pieces on display tell the story of the history of Oriental art, particularly Japanese calligraphy and ceramics. Additionally, the museum features the "Idemitsu Founder's Archive," which houses historical documents and materials related to the life of Idemitsu Sazo and the growth of the Idemitsu Kosan company. This allows visitors to experience a unique intersection of fine art appreciation and regional industrial history.
The main exhibits feature Japanese calligraphy, paintings, and fine ceramics from China and Japan. The exhibition rooms are designed with specialized spotlighting to highlight the intricate details of each piece. Exhibitions are structured around specific themes, such as "Masters of Ink Painting" or "Celadon Ceramics," focusing on specific genres or techniques. Visitors can also explore the Founder's Archive to learn about the historical journey of the museum's founder. Please note that visitors must maintain a respectful distance and are strictly prohibited from touching the artworks or display cases.
The museum is open from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM (last entry at 4:30 PM). The exhibition lineup changes throughout the year, offering a diverse range of artistic themes. For example, you might encounter themes related to spring and early summer aesthetics, or more traditional themes like "Forms of the Gods" during the autumn and winter seasons. While the museum is closed on Mondays, it remains open on public holidays. Please be aware that the museum also closes during exhibition changeover periods, so it is highly recommended to check the schedule before your visit.

The museum is located in the popular "Mojiko Retro" area, a district famous for its historical charm. Since it is only about an 8-minute walk from JR Mojiko Station, it is easy to combine a visit to the museum with a stroll through the historic district. The area offers a perfect blend of historical landscapes and modern cultural experiences.
To protect the precious artworks, please do not touch the exhibits or the display cases. We ask that you refrain from using writing instruments that could damage the art, such as fountain pens or calligraphy brushes. The entire museum is a non-smoking facility. Please set your mobile phone to silent mode or turn it off. Umbrellas should be placed in the umbrella stand at the entrance. Pets are generally not allowed, with the exception of service animals (guide dogs, hearing dogs, etc.). While there is no specific dress code, we ask for your cooperation in maintaining a quiet and respectful environment for all guests.
