Ichinomata Sakura Park is located in Toyota-cho, Shimonoseki City, Yamaguchi Prefecture, surrounding the Yonogara Reservoir (a dam lake). The most striking feature of this location is the 'Mizukagami' (water mirror) effect, where the lake surface reflects the surrounding mountains and sky with perfect clarity. The landscape is also famous on social media for its unique 'submerged forest'—the sight of weathered trees rising from the water. In spring, approximately 100 Yoshino cherry trees bloom, creating the famous 'Sakura Kaen' (inverted cherry blossoms) reflected in the lake.
The core of the park is the Yonogara Reservoir, a man-made lake completed in 1943. Over the 80+ years since its completion, the landscape has evolved into a seamless blend of human engineering and natural beauty. This history gives the site a dual identity: a scenic natural park and a significant piece of regional water resource infrastructure. The harmony between the reservoir and the surrounding wilderness is a result of many decades of natural progression.
The scenery at Ichinomata Sakura Park changes dramatically with the seasons. In spring, the cherry blossom trees line the banks, painting the water in shades of pink. The 'submerged forest' provides a unique, almost surreal backdrop that is exclusive to this area. Depending on the time of day and season, visitors can observe changing colors in the sky and the surrounding mountains reflected on the water's surface.
Choosing the right time to visit is essential to experience the best views. The peak season is spring (late March to early April) when the 100+ Yoshino cherry trees are in full bloom, offering the best 'Sakura Reflection.' In autumn (October to November), the surrounding mountains turn vibrant with fall foliage. For the best visual experience, we highly recommend visiting in the 'early morning.' During these hours, the wind is minimal, allowing the lake to become a perfect mirror for high-quality photography.
The primary activities at the park are leisurely strolls along the lakeside and landscape photography. For photographers, the combination of the submerged forest and the cherry blossom reflections offers world-class subjects. Additionally, the 'Ichinomata Onsen' hot spring area is located just a 5-minute drive away, allowing you to pair your scenic visit with a relaxing soak in a natural hot spring.
The area is rich in natural beauty. We recommend stopping by the 'Michi-no-Eki Hotoke Kaido Nishinoti' (Roadside Station) nearby. It serves as a convenient base for travelers looking to enjoy local delicacies and regional specialties.
The park and parking areas are free of charge. However, if you use nearby facilities or local shops, please ensure you have cash or a credit card ready.
English signage and English-speaking staff are limited within the park. We recommend using a translation app for smoother communication.
No advance reservations are required to enter the park. It is open to the public at all times.
Comfortable walking shoes are recommended for exploring the lakeside. If you plan to visit in the early morning, please bring warm clothing as temperatures can be quite low.
Photography is free and encouraged. If you are using a tripod, please be mindful of other pedestrians to ensure a safe environment.
Parking is available. Please note that some parts of the lakeside paths may be unpaved or have small steps/uneven surfaces.
