Ichijoji is a Tendai sect temple located in Kasai City, Hyogo Prefecture. Known as Mount Hokasan, it serves as the 26th-place temple on the Saigoku Kannon Pilgrimage. The grounds are home to many precious cultural assets, including a National Treasure three-story pagoda. Mount Hokasan is often poetically described as a mountain of blooming lotuses, offering a landscape that changes beautifully with the seasons. Visitors can enjoy the distinct charm of spring cherry blossoms, summer greenery, and autumn foliage.
The history of this temple dates back to the mid-7th century. It was established as a temple under the imperial decree of Empress Kōtoku and is deeply connected to the legendary figure Prince Shotoku. The main deity is the Kannon Bodhisattva. Throughout the medieval period, the temple served as a significant center for Buddhist teachings in the Harima region. The site preserves a deep connection to the history of the Tendai sect and features architectural styles that reflect the elegance of the Heian period.
The most iconic symbol of Ichijoji is its National Treasure three-story pagoda. This structure is a masterpiece of the Wayō architectural style from the late Heian period and is one of the oldest of its kind in Japan. Another significant treasure is the collection of ten silk paintings depicting Prince Shotoku and high-ranking Tendai monks. Additionally, the design of the main hall allows visitors to look down upon the pagoda, creating a seamless integration of architecture and natural scenery. Other important cultural assets, such as the Goho-do and Benten-do halls, are also scattered throughout the grounds.
While Ichijoji is beautiful year-round, the spring and autumn seasons are particularly spectacular. In spring, the cherry blossoms paint the temple grounds in soft pink, while autumn brings vibrant colors to the stone steps and ancient buildings. The seasonal beauty also includes the fragrance of citrus in summer and chrysanthemums in autumn. For the most peaceful experience, we recommend visiting in the early morning to enjoy the temple in the crisp, quiet air. If you wish to receive a temple stamp (Goshuin), please arrive between 8:30 and 17:00.
As the 26th station of the Saigoku Kannon Pilgrimage, Ichijoji is a must-visit for those on a spiritual journey. You can enjoy a meditative walk along the well-maintained paths and stone steps that harmonize with the surrounding nature. The view from the main hall looking down at the pagoda offers a unique perspective of traditional Japanese temple layouts. For a deeper historical immersion, you can visit the Treasure House (additional fee required) to view precious cultural artifacts.
The area around Kasai City is rich in historical temples and shrines. If you are traveling by car, Ichijoji is easily accessible via the Sanyo Expressway (approximately 10 minutes from Kakokita IC). It is a popular stop for those exploring the various pilgrimage routes and historical sites in the Hyogo region.
Due to the many stone steps on the grounds, we highly recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes. If you intend to collect a Goshuin (temple stamp), please note the reception hours are from 8:30 to 17:00. As this is a sacred site, please maintain a quiet demeanor and follow any posted rules regarding photography in specific areas.
